Solving the Fan Noise Problem in the Asus PC EEE

When I first got my ASUS EEE PC 8G, I was shocked that, after booting the 3rd time, the fan came on loudly and NEVER shut off. I was so unhappy with it I was tempted to return it.

A discussion with my favorite mechanical engineer (my son) who specializes in thermal projects led to this solution: when the fan comes on permanently, turn off the system, remove the battery for 1 - 5 minutes, re-attach, re-boot. Voila! No more fan noise. Not, at least, until the 3rd reboot!

In all fairness, Asus did dramatically reduce the problem with a software update that dramatically reduced the fan noise (much, much quieter) and it seems smarter about turning on: like, when it really needs to.

But, for those times when I just can't stand listening to the fan, I use the battery trick and it works like a charm.
